My direction to Dermatology and Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery was fueled by a singular lecture given by a Mohs Surgeon, Tatyana Humphreys, at Jefferson Medical College. What she did and could do for her patients was exactly what I aspired to do for mine. I was humanly hating it - medical school taught me to feel beaten down and to be punished by the hierarchy of the hospital. I was taught whatever is the opposite of compassion - by doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and fellow medical students. I decided, after Dr. Humphreys' lecture, that I would apply only to that field and if I didn't get the job, I would not become a hateful doctor. So, I would quit medicine and pivot to something else.

Somehow, I was incredibly fortunate to get my first choice job with one of the foremost Mohs surgeons and mentors in the country, Neil A. Swanson, MD. He was a pioneer in his own right - training under the first Mohs pioneers in San Francisco, Theodore Tromovich (Skin Cancer Foundation), Samual Stegman, and Richard Glogau, and taught us how to navigate cutaneous oncology and reconstruction. With medical, surgical and cosmetic care, the practice of advanced dermatology gives me the skills to improve another person's quality of life.

For 15 years as a private practice dermatologic surgeon in San Jose, California, and In almost 20 years of surgical work as a fellowship-trained and board-certified Dermatologic Micrographic surgeon and volunteer skin cancer surgeon in California, Nevada and Hawai'i, I have performed curative skin cancer and reconstructive surgeries for over 7,000 people in 5 American states and three countries and provide specialty care for over 15,000 people with non-surgical dermatologic needs and emergency medical consultations locally.
